Joggers are the better call for cold early-morning outdoor training, as they keep your legs warm until you're moving and protect against wind. Shorts suit indoor gym and warmer parts of the day. If you train year-round outdoors, one pair of each lets you match the weather rather than tough it out.

Plain joggers, a neutral hoodie and simple sports tees double easily as everyday casual wear for errands, lounging and relaxed days, which stretches their value. Bright, heavily branded or very technical-looking pieces read strictly as gym gear. If you want double duty, pick plain colours you'd happily wear to the shops.

Look for flatlock or reinforced seams and a firm, wide waistband — thin elastic and single-stitched seams are the first to go with frequent washing. Washing cold and air-drying protects the stretch far more than hot washes and the tumble dryer, which break elastic down. Kit you wash several times a week benefits most from this.

A regular fit that skims rather than clings gives freedom to move without feeling exposed, and is comfortable for most gym work. A closer fit helps for running or where loose fabric gets in the way, while a looser fit suits weights and warm-ups. Pick based on your main activity and comfort, not just the look.

Layer a moisture-wicking base top under a light hoodie or long-sleeve you can take off once you've warmed up, with joggers on the legs. That way you're warm at the start and can shed a layer as you heat up rather than being stuck too hot or too cold. A beanie and light gloves help for early outdoor sessions.

PEP accepts returns and exchanges in line with its current returns policy, so you can exchange activewear if the size isn't right — check the latest policy and time frame in-store or online before buying, and keep it unworn with tags where required. Keep your till slip or proof of purchase, as you'll usually need it.
