Cleaning

A few multi-purpose basics go a long way — an all-purpose cleaner, a dishwashing liquid, a bathroom or bleach product, a floor cleaner and cloths cover most jobs, so you don't need a separate product for every surface. Start with multi-purpose items and add specialists only if a job needs it. A small core kit cleans most of the home affordably.

Wash microfibre cloths separately from cotton items in warm (not hot) water using a small amount of laundry detergent. Never use fabric softener or tumble dryer sheets, as these clog the tiny fibres, reducing the cloth’s ability to trap dust and dirt. Air dry the microfibre cloths, as high heat from a tumble dryer can melt the synthetic fibres and ruin the texture.

No, you should always designate separate sets of cloths for the kitchen, bathroom, and general dusting to prevent bacterial cross-contamination. A simple system is to use different colours (e.g., Pink for the bathroom, Blue for the kitchen, Yellow for dusting) to keep them clearly separated. Designate one specific colour for the toilet/bathroom and stick to it strictly to prevent the spread of germs.

A Stainless Steel Scourer or Steel Wool Roll is the most aggressive and effective tool for tackling burnt food and rust on durable surfaces like oven racks and cast-iron pots. Always use a generous amount of warm water and dish soap with steel wool to help lubricate the surface and prevent scratching. For tough, burnt food, soak the pot overnight in warm water and dish soap to loosen the residue before scrubbing.

A Swab (or sponge cloth) is typically a cellulose-based cloth, which is highly absorbent and excellent for wiping up spills and drying surfaces quickly. A Dishcloth is usually a thicker, cotton/polyester blend towel used more for cleaning dishes, wiping counters, and general cleaning tasks. Store Swabs slightly damp in a clean container or draped over the tap to keep them soft and prevent them from hardening when dry.

Yes, the combo design is the most versatile for daily washing, allowing you to use the gentle sponge side for delicate glassware and the abrasive mesh for standard plates. This is the best value as one item can perform two different cleaning functions without needing to swap tools constantly. Always use the soft sponge side for wiping non-stick surfaces and the rougher mesh side for removing stubborn food residue.

Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth and a specialised glass cleaner (or the vinegar/water mix) and wipe in a consistent 'S' pattern from top to bottom. A glass or mirror surface is prone to streaking because of residue; ensure you are using a very clean cloth that is free of any soap residue. Clean glass/mirrors while facing a light source (window or lamp) so you can clearly see and eliminate all the remaining streaks.

Store cleaning products up high or in a locked cupboard out of children's reach, keep them in their original labelled containers, and never decant them into food or drink bottles, which causes dangerous mix-ups. Follow the safety warnings on each label. Keep them high, labelled and away from little hands.

If skin reacts to cleaning products, wear gloves, choose milder or fragrance-free options where available, rinse surfaces well, and keep rooms ventilated while cleaning. Follow the label warnings. Gloves, gentler products and good airflow reduce skin and breathing irritation.

Products work best with the right tools — microfibre cloths for wiping and polishing, a scrubbing sponge for tough spots, a mop for floors and a toilet brush — so grab these alongside the cleaners rather than making do. The right cloth improves the result. Pair your cleaners with suitable cloths and tools.
