Chino-style or sports shorts — which do I actually need?

Chino or cotton shorts look neat for going out, braais and casual days and can be dressed up with a collared top. Sports shorts are lighter, stretchier and made for exercise or the beach but read very casual. If you want one pair that looks presentable in public, go chino-style; keep sports shorts for training and the pool.

How do I keep the colour and shape after lots of washing?

Wash shorts inside out in cold water, fasten buttons and drawstrings first so they don't snag or distort, and dry in shade rather than full sun, which fades colour fast over a summer. Avoid high tumble-dryer heat, which shrinks cotton. Shorts get washed often in summer, so gentle washing keeps them looking new all season.

Which shorts hold up to a whole summer of heavy wear?

A slightly heavier cotton or cotton-blend with solid stitching at the pockets and seams outlasts thin, soft shorts that fray or lose shape by mid-season. Check the seams and the waistband stitching, which take the most strain. Darker colours also stay looking presentable longer between washes.

Are the pockets deep enough to hold my phone and keys without them falling out?

Pocket depth varies a lot on shorts, and shallow pockets are riskier here than on trousers because you sit, bend and move around more. Check the pocket depth against your phone size, and look for a back pocket with a button or zip to keep a phone or wallet secure. If you carry a phone every day, deeper front pockets or a zipped pocket are worth choosing over shallow open ones.

Button-and-zip shorts look neater and dress up better for going out, while elastic or drawstring waists are more comfortable and forgiving for lounging, sport and hot, lazy days.
