Appliances

The largest consumption comes from heating elements (stoves, geysers) and appliances that run constantly (fridges/freezers). Look for the South African Energy Efficiency Label (A-rating or better) on new appliances, as this is the primary indicator of lower running costs. Unplug small, non-essential appliances like chargers and TVs when not in use, as they still draw 'vampire power'.

Small, low-wattage items like LED lights, basic routers, and mobile phones are easily powered by a small UPS or power bank. For food preservation, minimise opening the fridge and freezer doors. A full freezer can keep food frozen for 10-18 hours during an outage. If the outage is short (2-4 hours), your major appliance is generally safe without intervention.

Major appliances are large, fixed-location items (Fridge, Stove, Washing Machine) that are generally more expensive and require professional moving.Small Appliances are portable, countertop, or hand-held items (Kettle, Toaster, Iron) that usually plug into a standard wall socket and are for specialized tasks.

With proper use and maintenance, a mid-range major appliance (fridge, washing machine) should last between 8 to 15 years, while small appliances last 3 to 7 years. Longevity depends heavily on two factors: avoiding load shedding damage (use surge protectors) and regular cleaning (filters, gaskets). A longer warranty (e.g., 2+ years) often indicates a manufacturer's confidence in the product's durability.

The principle is to disconnect the appliance from the wall outlet just before a planned outage or immediately after it begins to prevent damage from the re-energisation surge. Use dedicated surge protectors for high-value electronics (fridges, washing machines), ensuring the protector is rated for the appliance's wattage. Small coil-based appliances are prone to damage if left switched on during a power return.

The Energy Efficiency Label mandates that appliances must meet Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) with Class A being the most efficient. The label provides a clear, comparable visual scale, showing estimated annual or per-cycle electricity consumption in Kilowatt-hours (kWh).A vs. A+: When choosing between two similar models, opt for the one with the highest plus rating (e.g., A++ is better than A+) for maximum savings.

Routine user-maintenance (wiping down, cleaning filters/seals) should be done weekly or monthly, while professional servicing is only required if a fault develops. Clean the condenser coils behind your fridge at least once a year to prevent overheating and maintain efficiency, which is crucial in warmer climates. Run a monthly hot, empty cycle with vinegar or a dedicated cleaner to flush out grime and prevent odours.
