A wide-brim or bucket hat protects your face, ears and neck far better than a peaked cap, which only shades the face, so it's the better choice for long days outdoors or working in the sun. A cap is fine for casual or sporty use with lighter sun. For real sun protection, choose an all-round brim.

Choose an adjustable cap with a strap or clip at the back — it fits most head sizes and is the safest buy when you can't try it on or you're gifting. Fitted caps and beanies rely on your head size or stretch, so check for a size or 'one size' note. Adjustable is the low-risk choice.

A cap with a firmer structured front and good stitching keeps its shape longer than a soft, unstructured one, and darker colours fade less in the sun than bright ones. Keeping it out of the washing machine and harsh sun protects both shape and colour. A structured, neutral cap ages best.
