Duvet Inners

For South African summers, especially in coastal or lowveld regions, you need a lightweight duvet with a low TOG rating for maximum breathability. Look for a TOG rating between 3 and 4.5 (or an unrated, very lightweight quilt) to ensure comfort without overheating on warm nights. If you use a duvet cover, you can sometimes use the cover empty, or add a very thin blanket as the inner for the hottest weeks.

Colder climates like the Highveld require excellent insulation; choose a high TOG rating or use two layers together to trap heat effectively. A duvet inner with a TOG rating between 10 and 13.5 is generally recommended to provide sufficient warmth against deep winter cold. If you have a lower tog inner, add a quality fleece blanket or throw under the duvet inner for non-bulky, concentrated extra warmth.

Both are affordable, hypoallergenic synthetic polyester fillings, but microfibre is much finer and closer to the feel of natural down. Microfibre is usually softer, silkier, and offers superior warmth-without-weight. Hollowfibre is more breathable, lighter, and quicker to dry. For softness and warmth, choose Microfibre; for easy care and budget-friendly breathability, choose Hollowfibre.

South African bedding sizes are standardised, but it is essential to check the dimensions of your cover before purchasing an inner. Standard SA Double is generally 200 x 200 cm; Standard SA Queen is generally 230 x 200 cm (2.3m wide x 2m long).

Continental Pillows are large, square decorative pillows that require a specific, square Continental Pillowcase. They measure approximately 75 x 75 cm (some are 66 x 66 cm) and standard (rectangular) pillowcases will not fit them.

The goal is to build height and visual depth, starting with the largest pillows at the headboard and layering down to the smallest. Place two large Continental Pillows upright against the headboard first, then layer two Standard Pillows in front of them, followed by scatter cushions. For a tidy, complete look on a Queen or Double bed, use two Continental pillows and two Standard pillows.

To maintain hygiene and proper neck support, synthetic pillows should be replaced every 18 to 36 months, even if they look fine. Pillows absorb oils, skin, and dust mites over time, losing their supportive loft, which may impact sleep quality and can trigger allergies.
Tip: Fold the pillow in half; if it doesn't spring back immediately to its original flat shape, it's time to replace it.

Yes, most synthetic inners like Hollowfibre are machine washable, making them easy to keep fresh and hygienic, especially in South Africa. Use a large capacity machine on a cool, gentle cycle (30°C to 40°C) with a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Make sure that you run the inner through an extra rinse cycle to ensure all soap residue is fully removed, preventing fibre clumping and stiffness.

Yes, synthetic fillings like hollowfibre and microfibre are an excellent choice for allergy sufferers as they are naturally hypoallergenic. Unlike natural feather or down, synthetic fibres create an environment less welcoming to common household allergens like dust mites. Routinely washing your synthetic inner every few months will kill any potential dust mites, significantly reducing allergy symptoms.

Synthetic inners offer the best value for money, providing effective warmth and easy care at a fraction of the cost. While natural fills (down, wool) offer premium luxury and breathability, synthetic fills are more durable, easier to wash, and entirely cruelty-free. If you're furnishing a new home or shopping on a budget, synthetic inners provide the essential comfort and warmth you need.
