Light-up shoes are safe and the flashing lights can actually encourage a toddler to practice walking. The electronic components are safely sealed inside the rubber sole, though the shoes can be slightly heavier and might tire out a beginner walker faster than standard sneakers.

Rain boots are molded with a slightly wider fit than regular sneakers because the rubber does not stretch. This usually leaves enough room for thick winter socks, but it is always best to try the boots on with the socks to ensure a comfortable fit.

Fun 3D elements like fabric ears or bows are kept small and flush against the shoe so they do not interfere with walking. They are generally perfectly safe, but you should check them periodically to ensure they are securely stitched and won't catch on the carpet.

Check the fit by pressing down on the front of the shoe while they stand; you should feel a thumb's width of space before the toes. If the shoes leave red marks on their heels or the top of the foot, they are too small and need to be replaced.
