Bath Mats

A rubber-backed synthetic mat is generally the safest option as the backing provides an immediate, guaranteed anti-slip grip on wet tiles. 100% cotton mats can shift easily on wet, smooth tiles unless a separate, dedicated non-slip underpad is used.

The mat should be large enough to cover the immediate exit zone of the shower/tub, allowing you to stand fully on it with both feet. A minimum size of 50cm x 80cm is recommended for proper coverage outside a standard shower or bath.

Microfibre is known for its fast-drying ability and plush, soft feel, making it great for high-use family bathrooms, while Cotton is known for its superior absorbency, high durability, and classic, heavier feel underfoot. Choose Microfibre if quick drying in a cold or humid room is essential; choose Cotton for a traditional, hefty feel.

Most fabric bath mats (cotton/microfibre) are machine washable, but you must check the label for specific temperature guidelines. Never tumble dry mats with a rubber, PVC, or plastic backing as the heat will degrade the anti-slip material, causing it to crack and crumble.

Memory foam provides superior cushioning and comfort, relieving pressure on feet, but its structure can make it slower to dry than cotton. Ensure the memory foam mat has a durable, high-quality non-slip base, as the thick foam can make it easier to trip over the edges.

Your bath mat should primarily coordinate with your towels, as they are both textile elements that often carry the main colour theme. For a more sophisticated look, match the mat to the accent colour in your tiles or wall paint, and then use towels in a contrasting neutral.

A pedestal mat is a small, contoured rug designed to fit snugly around the base of the toilet (the pedestal). It is purely a decorative and comfort item used to hide the toilet base and keep your feet warm—it is not essential for safety. Pedestal mats are usually sold as part of a 2-piece or 3-piece set for a uniform, fully covered floor aesthetic.

You should consider replacing a bath mat every 1-2 years, or sooner if the anti-slip backing begins to crack, peel, or lose its grip. Persistent odours, visible mould, or thinning fabric after washing are all clear signs that the mat should be discarded for hygiene reasons.  If the mat slides when you press down on the edge with your foot, it is no longer safe and must be replaced.
