What is the safest way to clean a lamp shade or plastic lamp base?

Always unplug the lamp first. For most plastic or coated metal bases, a simple wipe-down with a damp (not wet), soft microfibre cloth is sufficient. For fabric lamp shades, use a lint roller or the soft brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, as water can cause staining.
