Kitchen Essentials

Maximize vertical space with stackable shelves, racks, and wall-mounted hooks for utensils and pot lids. Use drawer dividers for cutlery and small gadgets, and organize containers by nesting them within each other. Only keep kitchen tools you use at least once a month; donate the rest to free up space.

Focus on multi-purpose tools: a sharp chef's knife, a large all-purpose pot, a basic mixing bowl set, and a cutting board. A large measuring jug can double as a mixing bowl, and tongs can be used for serving, stirring, and flipping. A frying pan, a medium pot, and a kettle are the absolute minimum to get started.

Sponges and dishcloths should be replaced or deep-cleaned weekly as they are prime breeding grounds for bacteria. Sanitize sponges by microwaving a damp, soapy one for 1-2 minutes, or soaking cloths in a weak bleach solution. If your sponge or cloth smells sour, it is past its use-by date and should be replaced immediately.

A good manual can opener, a handheld whisk, a mortar and pestle (for grinding spices), and a stovetop kettle. Always keep a gas or induction plate lighter/matchbox handy, as well as a fully charged LED lantern. Tip: Have a few bottles of drinking water and a thermal flask with hot water ready before the outage.

Aluminium cookware is the cheapest and lightest option, offering good heat conductivity but less durability than stainless steel. Look for entry-level non-stick frying pans, which prevent food from sticking and require less oil. Never use metal utensils on non-stick surfaces to prevent scratching and flaking.

Transfer all dry staples (especially flour, mealie-meal, rice) immediately into clear, airtight plastic or glass containers. Pests like weevils or moths can chew through paper/cardboard bags but cannot penetrate a sealed container. Place a few bay leaves inside the container, as their natural scent repels many kitchen pests.

Kitchen shears are multi-purpose for cutting food: snipping herbs, trimming fat off meat, or cutting pizza/pastry. They are designed to come apart for easy, thorough cleaning, which a standard pair of scissors cannot do. Use them to easily cut open tough plastic packaging or foil in the kitchen.

Keep all chemical cleaning supplies (bleach, detergent) in a separate, low cupboard, ideally with a child lock. Designate an upper shelf or a different side of the room for non-chemical items like sponges, gloves, and cloths. Always store cleaning products in their original, clearly labelled containers.

A whisk (for eggs/batter), a spatula (for scraping bowls), and a basic measuring cup/spoon set. These three low-cost tools cover all essential mixing, measuring, and scraping needs. A large, sturdy mixing bowl is more important than a fancy electric mixer when starting out.

Store them separately in a cool, dark, dry, and well-ventilated place (e.g., a wire basket or paper bag). Never store potatoes and onions together as the gases they release will cause both to spoil faster. Do not store either in the refrigerator, as the cold will change the texture and taste.
