Kitchen Storage

Yes, airtight containers prevent oxygen and moisture from circulating, significantly slowing down spoilage and staling. They are essential for protecting dry goods (flour, sugar, biscuits) from moisture and pests, especially in humid climates. If the lid creates a definite, audible "snap" or uses clips, it is properly airtight.

Group similar items together (e.g., all baking goods, all tinned goods, all snacks). Use square or rectangular clear containers and stackable baskets to maximize the use of vertical and corner space. Put newer purchases at the back and older items at the front to reduce food waste.

Only use containers explicitly labelled "Freezer Safe" (often indicated by a snowflake symbol). Non-freezer-safe plastic can become brittle in low temperatures and crack, leading to freezer burn and food waste. Always leave a little gap (1-2 cm) at the top of the container for liquid food, as it expands when frozen.

Use a dedicated, shallow plastic basket, a magazine file, or a tension rod mounted on the inside of a cupboard door. Storing the lids separately prevents them from getting lost or taking up valuable space inside the container itself. Store the containers nested, and the lids vertically in a separate, dedicated section.

Look for lunchboxes that are insulated (often fabric or soft-sided) or that have a compartment for a small ice pack/freezer brick. An ice brick is essential in the hot South African climate to keep dairy, meat, and fresh fruit safe until lunch. Put the closed lunchbox in the refrigerator the night before to ensure it starts the day cold.

Clear containers allow you to immediately see what's inside and how much is left, which aids in inventory and prevents spills. Opaque containers are better for items that need to be kept away from light (like spices or some oils) to preserve flavour. Use clear for daily staples (flour, rice, sugar) and opaque for light-sensitive items.

Use a tiered, step-style spice rack in the cupboard or wall-mounted spice racks on the back of a cabinet door. Transfer mismatched spices into uniform, clear glass or plastic bottles with clear, consistent labels. If storing them flat in a drawer, place a small label on the lid so you can read it without picking it up.

Yes, wire racks allow you to store pots, pans, and lids vertically, preventing the messy, noisy act of stacking/unstacking. They stop the non-stick surface of pans from getting scratched and make retrieving the correct item instant. Measure the depth and height of your cupboard to ensure the wire rack will fit comfortably.

Check the bottom for the "Dishwasher Safe" symbol; if safe, always place them on the top rack. High heat from the heating element at the bottom of the dishwasher can warp or melt plastic containers. The rubber/silicone seal on the lid is often best hand-washed to prevent long-term distortion.

Glass containers are non-porous (no stains/smells) and are often oven/microwave safe, but they are heavy and can break. Plastic containers are light, cheap, and durable for transport, making them the most popular choice for daily commuting/school. Use light, durable plastic for daily transport; use glass for in-fridge storage/reheating at home.
