Household & Cleaning

The "High-to-Low" principle: start by dusting high surfaces, then clean medium surfaces (counters), and finish by sweeping or mopping the floor. Focus on high-traffic areas daily (kitchen sink, toilet) and reserve deeper tasks like washing curtains or cleaning window tracks for monthly. Daily sweeping of the kitchen and main living area prevents dust and sand (common in SA) from building up and scratching floors.

A plastic dustpan and brush should be cleaned at least monthly with warm, soapy water to prevent the build-up of dust, hair, and sticky residue. When sweeping, always use a short, sharp motion to flick dirt into the pan, not a long, pushing motion, which causes dirt to escape underneath. Use an old comb to gently remove trapped hair and fluff from the brush bristles after every few uses.

Use a Linen Spray (e.g., Ocean Breeze) on curtains, carpets, and linen, and place wickless wax melts in a burner for a safe, consistent home fragrance. Focus on the source: empty and clean all dust bins daily, and ensure drains and sinks are free of hair and food residue. Air flow is key; Open windows and doors for at least 30 minutes every morning to completely refresh the air in the house.

A Duster (like a feather or fluffy duster) is best for flicking light, loose dust off surfaces quickly but does not trap particles. A Microfibre Cloth uses static charge and its tiny fibres to trap and lift dust, dirt, and oil from a surface, making it better for a deep clean. Use a microfibre cloth slightly damp (with water only) for the most effective dust and fingerprint removal.

Always ensure the iron's soleplate is clean before use, and never iron directly over printed designs or sticky embellishments on clothes. Replace the cover when it becomes visibly stained or worn down, as a clean cover provides a smoother surface for better ironing results. Wipe the iron's soleplate with a damp cloth and a little dish soap when cool to remove starch or residue.

After emptying, spray the inside of the bin with a diluted mix of water and bleach or an antibacterial surface spray, and wipe it down with a cloth. For a simple deodoriser, place a cotton wool ball soaked in vanilla essence or a sprinkling of baking soda at the bottom of the bin liner. Ensure the bin is completely dry before replacing the plastic liner to prevent moisture from encouraging bacterial growth.

Wipe the stainless steel with a microfibre cloth and a specific stainless steel cleaner, or a drop of baby oil on a clean cloth. Always wipe with the grain of the steel (the faint lines) to prevent streaks and scratches, giving a mirror-like finish. Buff the appliance with a completely dry tea towel immediately after cleaning to achieve a streak-free shine.

Never use a stainless steel scourer on a non-stick pot, as it will scratch and ruin the surface. Reserve steel wool for tough oven racks or cast iron. Use a Gentle Scourer (typically foam-backed) or a soft-bristled brush on any delicate surface, including non-stick pots and glassware. If the packaging doesn't say "Non-Scratch," assume it will scratch your delicate items and use with caution.

A Lint Roller with an adhesive paper roll is the quickest and most effective tool for removing small fluff, lint, hair, and dust before heading out the door. Roll it firmly over the fabric in one direction. Look for lint rollers that come with a refill, as you will use them often. Keep a small, travel-size lint roller in your handbag or car for immediate touch-ups on the go.
