How can I set a stylish dining table on a budget in South Africa?

Focus on key items like a clean tablecloth and a simple centerpiece rather than expensive individual pieces. Use PEP's affordable matching sets for a cohesive look without the high cost of open stock premium brands. The Rule of Three: Combine a mat, a plate, and a napkin in coordinating colours for instant elegance.

What is the best way to safely store my dinnerware to prevent chips?

Store plates and bowls vertically in a dish rack or use felt/paper separators when stacking them.Vertical storage greatly reduces pressure on the edges, which is where most chips and cracks occur. Always lift, don't slide. Sliding ceramic items increases the risk of scuffing and chipping the edges.

Is Melamine dinnerware safe for kids and outdoor use?

Melamine is highly durable and virtually shatterproof, making it an excellent and safe choice for children and outdoor entertaining. It is not microwave-safe, but it is perfectly safe for serving hot and cold foods at the table. Test heat: If the food is too hot to touch, it might be too hot for Melamine, stick to serving only.

What non-electric kitchen items are essential during load shedding meals?

Focus on items that keep food warm or safe without electricity, such as thermal jugs, cooler bags, and airtight containers. A good thermal beverage dispenser can keep coffee or water hot for hours, and non-electric openers (can/bottle) are vital. Prep ahead by cooking and storing food in microwave-ready containers before the power goes out.

What is the difference between a placemat and a charger plate?

A placemat is a functional and decorative mat placed directly on the table, while a charger plate is a large, decorative base plate under the actual dinner plate. The charger plate is not used for eating; it acts as a frame for the dinnerware and is removed before the main course is served. Use a placemat for everyday use, and add a charger plate to elevate a meal to a special occasion.

How do I know if my new tablecloth will fit my dining table size?

Measure the length and width of your table, and add 40-60cm to each dimension for an ideal drop/overhang. Rectangular tablecloths often come in common SA sizes like 4-seater (130x180cm) and 6-seater (150x230cm). Tip: It's always better to have a slightly longer overhang than one that is too short and looks unfinished.

Are the dinnerware items sold at PEP available as single plates or only in sets?

Many basic items like dinner plates and side plates are available as open stock (sold individually) for easy replacement or custom ordering. Buying a full set (e.g., 12-piece) is generally the most cost-effective way to get a matching collection. Buy a basic white set, then use single-colour bowls/mugs for a trendy, eclectic look.

What are the benefits of using glass tumblers over plastic for everyday use?

Glass provides a neutral taste and is highly hygienic, as it is non-porous and easy to clean without retaining odours. High-quality, tempered glass is very durable for daily use, although plastic is the safer choice for outdoor or pool areas.

Can I put my coffee mugs or bowls in the dishwasher?

Always check the product's care label. Most ceramic and glass items are dishwasher safe, but metallic accents are not. Items with gold or silver rims (often dolomite/porcelain) should be hand-washed to prevent the metallic finish from fading. High heat warning: Placing hot ceramic straight into cold water can cause "thermal shock" and lead to cracking.

How do I correctly position cutlery for a simple family meal?

For a basic setting, the fork goes on the left, the knife (blade facing the plate) and spoon go on the right. If you are only serving a main course, you only need one set of cutlery; don't set out tools you won't use. Use napkins: Fold a cloth or paper napkin neatly and place it on the dinner plate for a touch of class.
