Mugs & Sets

Thick ceramic or stoneware mugs are generally superior for heat retention due to their density and insulation properties. Avoid very thin porcelain or glass mugs if you sip your coffee slowly, as they lose heat very quickly. Rinse your mug with hot water before pouring in your beverage to dramatically extend the warmth.

The unglazed base can trap dishwasher detergent and dirt; it should be scrubbed with a toothbrush and mild soap. Ensure this ring is completely dry before placing it on any wood surface to avoid water rings and mould/mildew. Dry the base: Always turn the mug upside down on a drying rack or towel to ensure this area dries fully.

A matching mug set offers a complete, co-ordinated look that is perfect for a housewarming gift or a starter home. Buying individual mugs allows you to pick specific, fun designs or colours that match the recipient's personality. Add diversity to your collection by getting a set for daily use; and individual mugs for decorative display or personalized tea/coffee moments.

Standard mugs typically hold between 250ml and 350ml, which is the volume needed for most instant or filter coffees. Jumbo' or 'Soup' mugs can range from 400ml up to 600ml and are great for tea, soup, or hot chocolate. If you have a capsule coffee machine, check its cup size setting (e.g., Espresso 40ml, Lungo 110ml).

Use a dedicated metal mug tree or stackable mug inserts to utilize vertical space and prevent accidental chipping. Never stack mugs directly on top of each other, especially those with narrow handles, as this strains the rims. A simple rubber shelf liner prevents slippage when pulling mugs in and out of the cupboard.

Dolomite is a type of ceramic known for being slightly lighter and having a very smooth finish, making it excellent for vibrant, printed designs. However, it can sometimes be more porous and fragile than heavy-duty stoneware, so handle with care. Choose Dolomite when the visual design/colour is the most important factor.

Glass mugs are primarily chosen for aesthetic reasons, allowing you to see the layers of a latte or the colour of tea. They do not retain heat as well as ceramic but are very easy to clean and do not retain any flavour from previous use. Choose glass for lattes, iced coffees, and showing off layered drinks.

Use a measuring jug (cup) and pour water into the mug until it is full; the measurement will give you the exact volume. Fill the mug to about 1cm below the rim for the practical, usable volume, not just the absolute fill capacity. When replacing a broken favourite, ensure the new mug has the same volume for consistency.

Ensure the mug tree is placed far from the edge of the countertop to prevent it from being knocked over. Load the largest/heaviest mugs on the lower hooks for better stability and balance. Most mug trees are designed for six standard-sized mugs; avoid overloading the unit.

Wire/metal stands are great space-savers and display pieces, allowing easy access to the mugs. Ensure the stand is sturdy and rust-proof. The stand is a bonus for display but doesn't affect the mug's quality. Choose a vertical mug stand when counter or cupboard space is limited.
