How can I stop my new ceramic plates from getting knife scratch marks (grey lines)?

These marks are usually residue from the metal cutlery, not actual scratches in the ceramic glaze. To remove them, use a gentle abrasive cleaner like Bar Keeper's Friend or a baking soda paste on the marks. Use a softer touch: Try to avoid scraping your knife hard against the plate surface when cutting.

Are all dinner plates and bowls microwave safe?

No, generally items made of Melamine, those with metallic trim, or old/vintage ceramic should not be microwaved. Look for the specific "Microwave Safe" symbol (often squiggly lines) on the bottom of the item or in the product specs. The Gold Rule: If it has gold, silver, or any metallic paint, do not put it in the microwave.

What is typically included in a standard South African 12-piece dinner set?

A standard 12-piece set is usually service for four people, containing four Dinner Plates, four Side Plates, and four Bowls. This is an excellent starter set but requires separate purchases for mugs and serving platters. For a single/couple, a set of four is ideal; for a family, buy two 12-piece sets to serve eight.

What colour dinnerware is best for making food look appealing?

White is the most versatile and popular choice because it provides a neutral backdrop that makes food colours pop. Darker plates (like slate grey or black) are trendy and make light-coloured food (e.g., pasta, rice) stand out dramatically. Avoid cold tones: Pale blue or grey plates can sometimes make food look less appetizing, stick to white or warm tones.

How do I know if a plain ceramic dish is microwave safe if it has no label?

Place the dish in the microwave next to a cup of water and heat for one minute on high power. If the dish remains cool to the touch (and the water is hot), it is generally safe; if the dish gets very hot, it is not safe. Use caution: If you are unsure, avoid microwaving the item to prevent thermal shock and breaking.

What is the purpose of a Side Plate vs. a Dinner Plate?

A Dinner Plate (the largest) is for the main course; a Side Plate (medium size) is typically for bread, salads, or starters. Side plates are essential for portion control and for serving children's smaller meals. Use your largest dinner plates as small serving platters for appetizers or snacks.

How can I transition my PEP dinnerware from casual to formal settings?

The formality comes from the accessories. Use cloth napkins, a crisp tablecloth, and simple, matching glasses. A simple white dinner plate can look formal when paired with a charger plate and two pieces of cutlery. A single, neat flower or a stack of elegant napkins will formalize the look.

Do PEP stores restock individual dinnerware items regularly for replacement?

Yes, popular lines, especially basic white or neutral open-stock items, are restocked frequently for replacements. If a specific pattern or colour is a limited edition, it may not be restocked once sold out, so buy enough initially. When buying an affordable set, buy one extra plate and bowl as an immediate, cheap replacement spare.

Is the dinnerware offered by PEP suitable for my first student flat?

Yes, PEP's dinnerware is designed to be highly affordable, durable, and practical, making it perfect for student life. Focus on Melamine or strong stoneware for maximum resistance to drops and daily wear and tear. All you need for a student start is one plate, one bowl, and one mug per person.

Are glass serving bowls and platters safe for hot foods?

Most standard glass serving ware is safe for room temperature or warm foods, but generally not for very high heat (like a hot oven).Use dedicated glass bakeware (like Pyrex/Opalware) for cooking; standard serving glass is not oven-safe. Never pour boiling water into a cold glass bowl, as the rapid temperature change will cause it to shatter.
