How do I choose the right rug size for a small South African lounge?

The rug should anchor the main furniture pieces, not float in the middle. The front legs of a couch or chair should rest on the rug. Leave at least 15cm of bare floor space between the edge of the rug and the walls of the room.

How do I prevent my rug from slipping and bunching on a tiled floor?

Slippage is dangerous and ruins the rug’s look; the essential solution is a non-slip rug underlay or gripper pad placed beneath the rug. For small bathroom mats, double-sided rug tape in the corners can be a temporary, low-cost fix to prevent tripping.

Can I use a regular indoor rug in a covered patio area?

Standard indoor rugs are not designed for outdoor use and will quickly fade, grow mould, or degrade when exposed to moisture, humidity, and sun. Look specifically for "Outdoor Rugs" made from durable, weather-resistant polypropylene, which is designed to handle rain and high UV exposure without damage.

Why do some rugs shed new fibres, and is it normal?

Yes, it is completely normal, especially for new rugs made from natural fibres like wool or certain cut-pile synthetic materials, a process called 'initial shedding.' This is residual fibre left from the manufacturing process. It will significantly lessen after a few months of routine vacuuming (use a low-suction setting). Never pull on loose threads or fibres; carefully snip them with sharp scissors to prevent a bigger pull or run in the rug's weave.

Which rug materials are best for high-traffic areas like a passage?

For long passages, use a dedicated runner rug instead of multiple small mats to create a cohesive look and protect the floor evenly. Nylon is highly resilient for high-traffic, but polypropylene offers better colourfastness and is commonly used for low-cost runners and mats.

Where should I place a small mat in my kitchen?

A small kitchen mat or runner should be placed directly in front of the sink or stove, where most standing time and potential spillage occurs. Look for a mat with a slight cushion or foam inner if you spend a long time prepping or washing up to reduce foot fatigue.

What is a 'Jacquard' rug and is it durable?

Jacquard refers to the weaving process that creates complex, woven-in patterns (often geometric or damask), giving the rug texture and visual depth. These rugs are generally durable because the pattern is woven into the structure (not just printed on top), making the design less likely to fade or wear away.

How do I choose a rug colour that matches my furniture?

The easiest rule is to have the rug share one or two accent colours with your existing throw pillows, curtains, or wall art. If your furniture is neutral (grey, beige), choose a bold, patterned rug to introduce colour; if your furniture is bright, choose a solid, neutral rug. To add texture to a bedroom, place a smaller, softer rug (like a faux fur) diagonally over the top of a larger, simpler rug.
