What does GSM mean for towels and what is a good GSM for a daily towel?

GSM (Grams per Square Metre) is the weight and density of the towel. Higher GSM means a thicker, heavier, and more luxurious towel. A towel in the 450–600 GSM range is ideal for daily use in South Africa, offering a good balance of absorbency, quick drying, and durability.

What size towel is best for children or guests?

The Hand Towel (approx. 50x90cm) is the most practical size for small children, guests, or for hanging next to the basin. A standard Bath Towel (approx. 70x130cm) is too large for children, takes longer to dry, and creates a bigger laundry load.

Should I wash new towels before I use them?

Yes, it is essential. New towels contain residual chemicals (like fabric conditioner from the dye process) that reduce absorbency. Washing them once "opens up" the cotton fibres, dramatically increasing the towel's absorption capacity for the first use.

Are Microfibre towels as good as cotton towels for a home bathroom?

Cotton is superior for a plush, full-body dry and is highly durable. Microfibre is good for its quick-drying properties and lightweight feel.

Is a towel rail or a hook better for drying towels in a humid environment?

A Towel Rail is always better for proper drying because it allows the towel to hang unfolded, maximising air exposure and ventilation. A Hook is convenient for quick hanging but causes the towel to bunch up, trapping moisture and slowing the drying process. Towels hung on a hook in a humid environment should ideally be washed and changed every 2-3 days to prevent mould/smell.

How large is a standard South African Bath Sheet?

A standard Bath Sheet is generally around 90cm x 150cm (or larger), providing significant coverage and a substantial wrap. This is considerably larger than a standard Bath Towel, which is typically around 70cm x 130cm.

What is the benefit of a ribbed or textured towel design?

Ribbed or textured (e.g., waffle weave) designs increase the surface area of the towel, which can enhance absorbency and drying time. Textures also add a modern, spa-like visual element to your bathroom decor compared to a plain, smooth towel.

Do I need to wash my towels in a separate laundry load?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Towels create a lot of lint and should not be washed with clothes to prevent lint transfer. They should also be washed at a slightly higher temperature (e.g., 40°C) than delicates to kill bacteria effectively.
